In the current alpha, the only thing to cause damage is swimming in the water without a raft. You will lose half a heart every second you spend in the water.
Health is lost in a number of ways:
* [[File:Icon health halfFull.png|32px]] Health will start to deplete after the hunger bar  empties as your character expends energy through activity.
* Fall damage will deplete a players hearts. Falling repeatedly from or once from a great enough height will result in the loss of all inventory held by your character.
